Following the break-up of the governing coalition at the end of 2024, the German federal elections on February 23 are supposed to create a new and stable government. While the Christian Democrats have been comfortably leading in the polls throughout the campaign, it has not been very clear, who might be their potential coalition partner. The right-wing populist AfD has polled as the second strongest party, but so far there has been an agreement in German politics that none of the other parties would consider a coalition with them. At the same time, the ruling Social Democrats are struggling to close the gap to the AfD while being in a head-to-head competition with the Green Party for the position of third strongest party. The Liberal Party whose exit from government at the end of 2024 created the crisis that caused the early elections, struggle to pass the 5% hurdle that is necessary to be represented in the parliament. Finally, two left wing populist parties also poll around the 5% mark. All of this makes the composition of the parliament as well as subsequent coalition options hard to predict.

Two Circle U. Chairs from the Democracy Hub, Prof. Claudia Matthes from Humboldt University in Berlin and Prof. Jens Jungblut from the University of Oslo, will summarize the main results of the elections and discuss their implications for the upcoming coalition negotiations and European politics in general. Prof. Dan Banik, Academic Director of the Democracy Hub from the University of Oslo will moderate the discussion.
